Telugu Cinema History
Also known as Tollywood, is the Telugu-language film industry based in Hyderabad, India. It is the fourth-largest film industry in India in terms of the number of films produced each year. Telugu cinema has a long and rich history, dating back to the early 1900s.
The first Telugu film, Bhishma Pratigna, was released in 1912. The film was directed by Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu and starred Surabhi Kamalabai. Bhishma Pratigna was a silent film, but it was a commercial success. It helped to pave the way for the growth of Telugu cinema in the years to come.
In the 1930s, began to produce sound films. The first Telugu sound film, Bhakta Prahlada, was released in 1931. The film was directed by H. M. Reddy and starred Surabhi Kamalabai. Bhakta Prahlada was a critical and commercial success. It helped to popularize sound films in Telugu cinema.
In the 1940s and 1950s, Telugu cinema experienced a golden age. The industry produced some of its most iconic films during this period, including Devadasu (1953), Pathala Bhairavi (1955), and Mayabazaar (1957). These films were popular with audiences and critics alike. They helped to establish Telugu cinema as a major force in Indian cinema.
In the 1960s and 1970s, continued to grow and evolve. The industry produced a wide range of films, including action films, comedies, dramas, and musicals. Some of the most popular films of this period include Gunsmoke (1964), Aa Naluguru (1967), and Swathimuthyam (1974).
In the 1980s and 1990s, faced some challenges. The industry was affected by the rise of Hindi cinema and the decline of the Telugu film industry in Madras. However, Telugu cinema continued to produce some popular films, including Gharana Mogudu (1982), Mr. Perfect (1993), and Aapadbandhavudu (1998).
In the 2000s and 2010s, Telugu cinema has experienced a revival. The industry has produced some of its biggest blockbusters in recent years, including Magadheera (2009), Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). Telugu cinema is now one of the most popular film industries in India. It is known for its action, drama, comedy, and music.
