Trudeau: First PM to separate while in office

Canadian Prime Minister and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced the separation

The announcement came on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, that they are separating after 18 years of marriage. They made the announcement in separate statements posted on Instagram.

In their statements, they said that they had made the decision after “many meaningful and difficult conversations” and that they would remain “a close family with deep love and respect for each other.” They also asked for privacy for the “well-being of our children.”

The couple has three children together: Xavier, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrien, 9.

The first Canadian prime minister to separate while in office since his father, Pierre Trudeau, and his mother, Margaret Trudeau, split in 1977.

The couple’s separation has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have expressed sadness and support, while others have been critical of the timing of the announcement.

It is unclear what the future holds for him and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. However, they have said that they remain committed to raising their children together.
