Ancient artifacts: USA returned 266 of them

The U.S. has returned 266 ancient artifacts to Italy

Here are some of the latest updates from the world of art:

  • The Orlando Museum of Art has sued its former director for staging a show of fake Basquiat paintings. The FBI raided the museum’s exhibition of 25 paintings purportedly created by the late artist, and the museum now says that they are forgeries.
  • The U.S. has returned 266 ancient artifacts, including Roman coins and Etruscan tile paintings, to Italy. The objects were illegally exported from Italy and were later recovered by the FBI.
  • Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s new installation, “Atmospheric Memory” is now on view at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The work uses sensors to capture the movement of people in the museum and then uses those movements to create a cloud of fog that fills the space.
  • Real estate developer-turned-artist Abbott Stillman is making his gallery debut with an exhibition of abstract paintings at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York City. Stillman’s paintings are inspired by his experiences in the financial world and explore themes of abstraction, geometry, and color.
  • The 2023 Venice Biennale, the world’s oldest and most prestigious art exhibition, is set to open on April 23. The theme of this year’s Biennale is “The Milk of Dreams,” and the curator is Cecilia Alemani.
